Application Background
A robot picks a carboard or plastic core from conveyor, holds the core in place on a notching device, and drops it into a tub. A new size of cardboard core requires a new size gripper.
Goal
3D Print a functional end effector to save on manufacturing costs.
Material Considerations
The Carbon Fiber additive helps to maintain rigidity – in this application it is important the tooling not flex so that the precision of the robotic positioning is maintained.
Results
Quoted D2 Tool Steel Price: $600 per piece
Cost of 3D Printed Part: $3.60 per piece
The company was able to save approx. $1193 by 3D printing the existing design. The tool functions the same as the steel counterpart and can quickly be replaced or altered when necessary.
