The Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg is a renowned campus university and with its four faculties covers almost all university departments of a full university.

Irrespective of its proximity to the Bundeswehr, the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg is and will continue to be organised in terms of tasks, structure and rights in accordance with the provisions of Hamburg state law. Research and teaching are free, and the university manages its academic affairs itself.

The research projects funded by the German Research Foundation, federal ministries, the European Union and foundations show the current research strengths of HSU. The acquisition of DFG research groups and BMBF junior research groups as well as joint professorships with the Helmholtz and Leibniz Associations are characteristics of the dynamic atmosphere and the university strategy at Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.
